A Young Nuclear Physicist

This recent TED talk is a fabulous example of what can happen when a young person takes an interest in physics. I must emphasise that, as Tyler briefly mentions in the video, he has not achieved the controlled thermonuclear fusion that many hope to one day see as an energy source. His reactor consumes far more energy than it produces so it’s too early to conclude that this planet’s fossil fuel problems have been solved.

Though inspiring, the video provides little technical context so for more information about how others have done the same thing in their basements and garages check out The Open Source Fusor Research Consortium.

Feel like giving it a try? This would not be a trivial project and serious safety precautions would be required, but just think of the reaction you would get from your neighbours if they found out what you were working on.
